On February 19, 2018, the course of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s social media took an unexpectedly #relevant turn when a seemingly innocuous post to @ATLAirport channels turned into a viral sensation. What started as a desire to participate in the Black Panther conversation – it’s local to Atlanta, after all – turned into ATL’s most successful social media post, ever. And won The Webby Awards 2019 People's Voice in the Social Media Content Series & Campaigns category for Travel.
Between Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, ATL Airport garnered 2,852,708 impressions from the post alone. From all tweets related to the post (414 total), ATL garnered a whopping 4,472,096 impressions. To put this in perspective, it would typically take these accounts anywhere from two to five normal months to accumulate 4.5 million impressions on Twitter. ATL Airport gained a total of 1,925 new followers in 5 days thanks to this post.
